I-Day and Indian Americans (An independent perspective: Thomas Koovallur)

Let me wish Happy Independence Day to all Indians living all around the world. Happy to know that Indians living all around the world are getting ready to celebrate India’s 69th Independence Day, especially in the U.S.
It is true that in the U.S. all the governmental agencies are fully supporting the event and they are treating the Indian Community as their good friends. We should be proud of it.
At this time we can remember all those who sacrificed their life for the freedom of India, especially Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, and many others.
As Indians we can be proud of the present BJP government under the leadership of P M Sri NarendraModi. Even though I am a Christian I personally supported PM Modi during the time of his election campaign, irrespective of religion. I really wanted the BJP government come into power because of the reason that in the past our governments were very weak. I was fully aware that majority of the people of India are Hindus, and they were not interested in politics. The ruling parties knew it, and they were actually cheating the majority of the people under the name of secularism.
If we look into the history of India we can see that 100 percent of the Indians were Hindus in the Indian Continent, and they were very peaceful community at that time. Then the Mongols invaded India and they terrorized the Hindus. After the Mongol dynasty the Mughal Empire invaded India and they suppressed the Hindus and converted many into Islam.
Then came the British Empire in 1757 under the name of East India Company. They were able to divide people of India. Then the Christian missionaries started to flow to India and they also started to convert the Hindus. Slowly the British Raj came to India and they pretended that they are trying to save India. The British Raj ruled India until 1947, and they were able to divide India into Pakistan and India. India remained as a Dominion of the Crown until January 26th, 1950.
Since we got independence from the British Raj none of the elected governments ever get full support from the people of India. Weaker governments were formed with the help of small local parties, and the government agencies were infested with corruption. It was also true that Indian national Congress as the major party was simply following the British Raj, that is, “ Divide and Rule” policy.
When we are celebrating the 69th Independence day it is good to review our past governments and see whether any of the leaders were able to lift up the status of the India in the United nations or in the security Council.
The governments were formed under the following Prime Ministers:
Jawaharlal Nehru, LalBahadhurShastri, Gulzarilalnanda, Morarji Desai, Charan Singh, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, V.P. Singh, Chandra Shekhar, P.V. NarasimhaRao, H.D. DeveGowda, , L.K. Gujral, AtalBihari Vajpayee, Dr. Manmohan Singh, followed by Sri NarendraModi since May 26, 2014.
It is shameful that even smaller countries like Israel and France have more power in the Security Council, and India don’t have a voice.
As a senior Indian American I am really proud of the works done by the PM Sri Narendra Modi within a year that none of the Prime Ministers could do .I am so happy that we got a powerful national leader who knew what happened to India in the past. He knew that India has everything, including manpower, natural resources, and even intellectuals to modify India to a better place.
I remember that during his Madison Square Garden speech, after his election in 2014, he declared that he is going to digitalize India, and every Indian are going to play with mouse. He also declared that he is going to clean India. Whatever he said he tried to practice, that also within a short period. For the first time in the history PM Modi took initiation to Clean Ganga, that none of the former Prime Ministers could ever dream of it. Now the whole world is supporting his idea of Cleaning Ganga. Here we have to understand that Ganga provides water about 40% of Indian population, that is about 500 million people. Now even china, Japan, and many other nations started investing money in Cleaning Ganga project.
At the time of his first U.S. visit as PM , Sri Modi also invited all intellectuals ,who are working abroad, to come back to India. This is a good sign for all Indian Americans. In his first U.N Speech he requested the world governments to declare one day as International Yoga day, that also materialized. The entire world celebrated June 21st 2015 as International Yoga Day. The whole world congratulated PM Modi, except a few Indians who are always opposing his ideas.
We can see that within a year the attitude towards India by the world has changed dramatically. The entire world governments are interested to connect with India and to invest in India. Now India’s market is open to all.
PM Modi has been working tirelessly to change India’s global image by tackling hygiene, fighting against corruption, etc., and he is the first Prime Minister who tried to make connection with Latin America.
Now PM Modi is visiting U.A.E. and other middle Eastern countries, not to waste national wealth like other national leaders, but to increase trade and investments. He is doing everything for the betterment od India. His “ Make India” project got appreciation even from European countries, and many countries came forward to invest in India. It is true that PMModi’s government is doing everything for India.
When we, the Indian Americans, are celebrating our Independence Day, let us think for a moment about our independence. Are we truly happy with the attitude of the India Government towards us? For me, as a senior Indian American, I am not happy because of the heinous act of India’s former UPA government, who tried to take away our birth right by the act of “ Renunciation of Indian Citizenship and Surrendering the Indian Passport” from those who took American Citizenship.
As an Indian born I feel like the former UPA government took our birth right by this act. It is actually a human rights violation. To resolve this problem there is only one solution, that is, to give Dual Citizenship to all eligible Indian Americans who got U.S. Citizenship. Most of the U.S. Citizens have dual citizenship, like people from Brazil, Mexico, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, Canada, Iran, France, Ireland, U.K., New Zeeland, and many other major industrialized nations, then why not the Indians are restricting dual citizenship.
Let us hope and pray that PM Sri NarendraModi one day will look into our problem and resolve our problems.
Once again, let us rejoice at this time of Independence Day, because we got a powerful leader who could definitely modernize India, and Indians will be recognized by the whole world. In such a case we all can live happily and peacefully anywhere in the world.

To commentor Teresa: Expected more substance in your comment. It is like silly talk , "he suspended passport", "rss leader said that, this", "churches attaked" . The article is about the Prime minister of the largest democracy of the world. Not about a panchayat member who should get involved in all local issues and disputes.
People in America(Malayalees), should widen their sources of information, to avoid sounding paranoid.
Until the poverty of India is eliminated, until everybody gets good drinking water, until everybody gets access to sanitation, until women can walk freely without the fear of being raped nobody can claim that India is free. According to a study conducted in 2012, the Indian government stated 21.9% of its population is below its official poverty limit. The World Bank, in 2011 based on 2005's PPPs International Comparison Program, estimated 23.6% of Indian population, or about 276 million people, and lived below $1.25 per day on purchasing power parity. One should not get excited with the development program taking place in cities but look into what is happening in the suburbs of India where people are struggling make both meet.
Do you like functions in America starting with Hail Mary ....? If not dont support these religious fanatics.
Congress had many faults. But they built INdia, kept its democracy and treated all as Indians. Under BJP, Muslims and Christians will be sexond class peopl. Do you want that? Modi's slogans are only a ploy. dont fall for that.
Just like you I'm also afraid, unless some one strong rules India, India also ( at least Kerala ) will be like Saudi or Iran , ( the spread of Kashmir and Malappuram ). Do you want that to happen? I don't want.
The BJP and Sanghis want a religious state. Do you like a CHristian state in america? even Koovalllur may not like it. Then why for India?
BJP got only 31 percent votes that too in anger against Manmohan govt. There is no majority for BJP among people.
You say Kashmir. The people there dont want to be part of India. What has Malappuram to do with that? Just beacuse one religion has more nummbers there, it does not mean anything. But fanatic like you make it appear that something is wrong in Malappuram. Nothing like that there. Only people who want to make Muslims and Chrstians second class citizens will think like that.
