IOC condemns the campaign to denigrate the legacy of Nehru

Indian Overseas Congress (IOC, USA) expresses grave concern over the tone and content of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech at the Parliament denigrating the legacy of Nehru and attacking the Nehru-Gandhi family that includes the two who have even sacrificed their lives in serving the nation. “It is unfortunate that the leader of the ruling party was engaged in a tirade against history instead of dealing with the current economic downturn caused by the errant policy implementations of this administration,” said George Abraham, Vice-Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, USA. "Ever since Narendra Modi came to the office of Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru became his favorite punching bag with a deliberate effort and calculated campaign to tarnish his legacy and diminish his accomplishments. It is very consistent with a pattern of behavior from his ruling party to rewrite history and misinform the public to further its political ends" Mr. Abraham added.

IOC, USA understands the frustration of Mr. Modi after having promised to create 10 million jobs a month and improve the lives of those rural folks,  not only that he failed on both of those scores, but the country has also been witnessing a depressed job market in the IT sector and increased farmer suicides.

Modi’s speech in Parliament where he conveniently twisted history when he said that had Sardar Patel been the first PM, all Kashmir would have been ours.  All available facts of history disprove Modi’s theory in this regard, and he may probably need a history lesson to refresh his memory.  Rajmohan Gandhi in his biography “Patel: A Life (Page 407-8,438)” talks about Patel’s thinking of an ideal bargain: if Jinna let India have Junagadh and Hyderabad, Patel would not object to Kashmir acceding to Pakistan.

Moreover, it is not only the Separatists in Muslim League that drove India to the tragedy of partition but also Hindutva zealots who demanded a Hindu State to replace a secular India. RSS rejected the whole concept of a composite nation and made it easy for the British Colonialists to drive the final nail of their divide and rule strategy on an emerging free country.

Instead of addressing serious problems at hand, Modi’s whole exercise in the Parliament has been an attempt to smear the opposition and divert attention away from his failure to keep his promises to the voters that he made in 2014.

IOC requests the Prime Minister to respond to the questions raised by the President of the Congress party and the nation is eagerly waiting!

George Abraham, Vice-Chairman

Rahul Gandhi, President of the All India Congress Committee, released the following Press Statement right after Modi’s speech. It states the following:

Our Nation faced with three critical problems today:

-    Each day over 30,000 youth enters the job market. Of these, we can provide only 450 of them a job. We are creating an army of 1 million new unemployed youth every month.

-    Agriculture, India’s backbone is under severe stress. Inadequate remuneration and a lack of government support are breaking the will of our farmers and forcing them to commit suicide.

-    India faces new dangers on her borders, with frequent cease-fire violations by Pakistan that have taken Indian lives, and a Chinese buildup near Doklam. The security of our nation is in peril.

The nation expected the Prime Minister to address these three issues and provide us with a vision. We were waiting to support and applaud him for such a vision. Instead, Prime Minister’s speech today was an attempt at diverting the nation’s attention from these three problems.

The truth is the Prime Minister does not know how to take India forward. That is why he always reaches into the past.

We are happy with the Prime Minister to be obsessed with the Congress Party, but it is a disservice for the Prime Minister to spend so much time on the Congress and so little time on the future of the nation. The nation has reposed its trust in the Prime Minister. It expects the Prime Minister to respond with seriousness towards its problems.

The Prime Minister has spoken time and again about corruption and his commitment to rooting it out. Now when confronted with RAFALE, in which he directly intervened, he is completely silent. We have asked him three fundamental questions.

1.    Did the Prime Minister get the necessary clearances from the Cabinet Committee on Security before he negotiated and committed to the purchase of RAFALE aircraft from France?

2.    How much did the Prime Minister agree to pay for each aircraft?

3.    Why did the Prime Minister bypass HAL and prefer to favor a private entity with no previous defense production experience?

The Raksha Mantri had earlier committed to answering all these questions. She has now reneged on that commitment. And the Prime Minister has nothing to say.

Instead, Prime Minister chooses tot take credit for buying cheaper solar panels and cheaper gas when it is widely known that the international prices of these have plummeted in recent years.

We expected a vision. Instead, we got a visionless election speech. It didn’t have the gravitas or maturity you would expect of a Prime Minister.

Yours sincerely,Rahul Gandhi.
