വെതര്‍ ഫോര്‍ഡ് (ടെക്‌സസ്): മരുന്നുവാങ്ങി നല്‍കുവാന്‍ പണമില്ലാതെയാണ് ഭാര്യ മരിച്ചതെന്ന് ഭര്‍ത്താവ്.

4 വര്‍ഷമായി ടെക്‌സസ് വെതര്‍ഫോര്‍ഡ് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ ജില്ലയിലെ അദ്ധ്യാപിക ഹെതര്‍ ഹോളന്റ് (38) ഫ്‌ളൂ വൈറസ് ബാധിച്ചു ഫെബ്രുവരി 11 ഞായറാഴ്ചയാണ് മരിച്ചത്.

വെള്ളിയാഴ്ച രോഗം ഗുരുതരമായതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് അദ്ധ്യാപികയെ ഐ സി യു വില്‍ പ്രവേശിപ്പിച്ചത്.

ഫ്‌ളൂ മെഡിക്കേഷന്‍ വാങ്ങുന്നതിനാവശ്യമായ കൊ പെ നല്‍കുവാന്‍ പണമില്ലായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് ഹെതര്‍ ഫോര്‍ഡിന്റെ ഭര്‍ത്താവ് ഫ്രാങ്ക് ഹോളണ്ട് പറഞ്ഞു.

ഹെതര്‍, ഠാമി ഫ്‌ളൂ വാങ്ങാന്‍ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നുവെന്നും, അതിനാവശ്യമായ 116 ഡോളര്‍ കണ്ടെത്താനായില്ലെന്നും ഫ്രാങ്ക് പറഞ്ഞു.

രോഗം മൂര്‍ച്ചിച്ചതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് അദ്ധ്യാപികയെ ഡയാലിസിസിന് വിധേയമാക്കിയെങ്കിലും ജീവന്‍ രക്ഷിക്കാനായില്ല.

സഹ പ്രവര്‍ത്തകര്‍ക്കും, വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികള്‍ക്കും ഏറെ പ്രിയങ്കരിയായിരുന്നു അന്തരിച്ച അദ്ധ്യാപിക.

അടുത്ത കാലത്തൊന്നും ഉണ്ടാകാത്ത രീതിയില്‍ ഫ്‌ളൂ മാരകമായി മാറിയതില്‍ ജനുവരി മൂന്നാം വാരം അവസാനിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അമേരിക്കയില്‍ 4064 പേര്‍ മരിച്ചതായ സി ഡി സി യുടെ റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടില്‍ പറയുന്നു. ഫെബ്രുവരിയില്‍ രോഗം ബാധിച്ച 10 പേരില്‍ ഒരാള്‍ വീതം മരിക്കുന്നതായും റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടില്‍ ചൂണ്ടിക്കാണിക്കുന്നു. ടാമി ഫ്‌ളൂ എന്ന ഔഷധത്തിന്റെ ദൗര്‍ലഭ്യം രാജ്യത്ത് അനുഭവപ്പെടുന്നതായും റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടുകള്‍ ഉണ്ട്.

Ms. Holland went to the pharmacy. She learned the antiviral medication would cost her $116 under the prescription-drug coverage she had as a teacher, and she refused it. They had the money, Mr. Holland said: “It’s principle with her. She’s a very frugal person in general, always has been.”

After bringing their children home from church that night, Mr. Holland discovered his wife was taking Nyquil, he said. She told him she thought the price of the antiviral was ridiculous. He went to the pharmacy Thursday morning and got it filled himself. “I made her start taking it,” he said.

A 38-year-old primary school teacher in Texas died because of complications from the flu after she delayed picking up her medication because of its cost, her husband has said.

Heather Holland, a second-grade teacher and mother of two, is said to have refrained from collecting her prescription drugs because of a $116 (£84) payment.

Ms Holland’s husband, Frank, told local paper the Weatherford Democrat that his wife thought the medicine was too expensive.

Mr Holland said he bought the prescription for her when he found out, but her health quickly deteriorated.

“Friday night, things escalated and she ended up in the ICU,” Mr Holland said. “The doctors got the blood culture back and they had to put her dialysis early Saturday."

Ms Holland, who had a 10-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son, died the next morning, on 4 February.

Her husband added: “I have to be strong for the kids, but it’s still surreal, it hasn’t all set in.

“We’ve been together a long time, over half my life. She’s my best friend, my soulmate, my everything.”
