A funeral service will be held Monday for a 47-year-old Port Huron man who died Wednesday in the Black River. 

Visitation for Robert John "Bob" Lewandowski will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home, 1720 Elk St., Port Huron. The funeral service will be at noon Monday at the funeral home, with visitation starting at 11 a.m. 

Lewandowski was a married father of three and worked at Intertape Polymer Group. 

"Above all, Bob loved being a husband and a father," his obituary reads. 

It wasn't immediately clear if arrangements had been made for the man officials said tried to rescue Lewandowski.

Sumith Jacob Alex, 32, of Clinton Township, also died in the Black River Wednesday. 

Officials said Lewandowski fell out of his dinghy and Alex jumped in off a nearby pontoon boat to help him. 

Neither man serviced. Rescue crews and divers searched the river for hours before locating both men. Autopsies were scheduled Thursday. 

Mary Ellen Kidnie said she used to work with Alex and they were close. 

"To anyone it is not surprising that he died that way, helping save someone else," she said. 

Kidnie said their place of work, Henry Ford OptimEyes, had grief counselors available for staff Thursday. 

"There's so many deaths in everybody's lives. The only thing I can think of is God is going on vacation and he needed someone to watch over the plant."

Kidnie said Alex was recently married and worked as a manager at the company's West Bloomfield location. 

"He was just truly the best human one could ever meet. He was just truly special," she said.
