മിസ്സിസിപ്പി: നവംബര്‍ 6 ന് നടന്ന ഇടക്കാല തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില്‍ മിസ്സിസിപ്പിയില്‍ നിന്നും യു എസ് സെനറ്റിലേക്ക് മത്സരിച്ച സ്ഥാനാര്‍ത്ഥികളില്‍ ആര്‍ക്കും 50 ശതമാനം വോട്ടുകള്‍ ലഭിക്കാതിരുന്നതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് നവംബര്‍ 27 ന് നടന്ന റണ്‍ ഓഫ് തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില്‍ റിപ്പബ്ലിക്കന്‍ സ്ഥാനാര്‍ത്ഥി സില്‍ഡി ഹൈഡ് സ്മിത്തിന് (59) വന്‍ വിജയം.
നവംബര്‍ 27ന് 95 % വോട്ടുകള്‍ എണ്ണിക്കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ റിപ്പബ്ലിക്കന്‍ സ്ഥാനാര്‍ത്ഥിക്ക് 54.3% വോട്ടുകള്‍ ലഭിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ ഡമോക്രാറ്റിക് സ്ഥാനാര്‍ത്ഥി മൈക്ക് എപ്‌സിക്ക് 45.7% വോട്ടുകള്‍ മാത്രമേ നേടാനായുള്ളൂ.
ഈ വര്‍ഷം ആദ്യം റിട്ടര്‍ ചെയ്ത താഡ് കോക്ക്‌റിന്‍ പകരം താല്‍ക്കാലികമായി സെനറ്ററായി നോമിനേറ്റ് ചെയ്തതായിരുന്നു ഹൈഡ് സ്മിത്തിനെ. റിപ്പബ്ലിക്കനാണ് ഈ സെനറ്റ് സീറ്റ് കൈവശം വച്ചിരുന്നത്.
1982 ന് ശേഷം സീറ്റ് വീണ്ടെടുക്കാം എന്ന ശുഭ പ്രതീക്ഷയായിരുന്നു മൈക്ക് എപ്‌സിയുടെ പരാജയത്തിലൂടെ ഡമോക്രാറ്റിക്ക് പാര്‍ട്ടിക്ക് നഷ്ടമായത്. 2016 ല്‍ 18 പോയിന്റ് വിജയമാണ് ഇവിടെ ട്രംമ്പിന് ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നത്.
ഇതോടെ യു എസ് സെനറ്റില്‍ റിപ്പബ്ലിക്കന്‍ പാര്‍ട്ടിക്ക് 53, ഡമോക്രാറ്റിക്കിന് 47 സീറ്റുകളും ലഭിച്ചു.
