വംശീയ സമത്വത്തിനു വേണ്ടിയുള്ള പോരാട്ടത്തില്‍ മുന്നണി പോരാളിയായി സിനി സ്റ്റീഫന്‍

ജോര്‍ജ് ഫ്ളോറിയിഡ് വധത്തെ തുടര്‍ന്നു അമേരിക്കയിലൊട്ടാകെ നടന്ന പ്രക്ഷോഭത്തില്‍ പങ്കെടുത്ത ചുരുക്കം ഇന്ത്യക്കാരില്‍ ഏറ്റവും അധികം ശ്രദ്ധ നേടിയത് സിനി സ്റ്റീഫനായിരുന്നു. മലയാളീസ് ഫോര്‍ ബ്ലാക് ലൈവ്‌സ് എന്നു മലയാളത്തില്‍ എഴുതിയ ബോര്‍ഡ് ഉയര്‍ത്തിപ്പിടിച്ച് നില്‍ക്കുന്ന സിനി സ്റ്റീഫന്റെ ചിത്രം പെട്ടെന്ന് ലോകശ്രദ്ധ തന്നെ ആകര്‍ഷിച്ചു.
അതു കണ്ട് ഇന്ത്യയില്‍ നിന്നു ഏതോ വിവരദോഷി അത് പ്രസിഡന്റ് ട്രമ്പിന്റെ ട്വിറ്റര്‍ പേജില്‍ ഇട്ടു. അടിയില്‍ കമന്റും. 'പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട പ്രസിഡന്റ്, ഞാനൊരു ഇന്ത്യക്കാരനാണ്. ഇവിടെ ഇടതു ഭരിക്കുന്ന ഏക സംസ്ഥാനമാണ് കേരളം. അതുകൊണ്ട് ദയവായി എല്ലാ മലയാളികളെയും നിങ്ങളുടെ രാജ്യത്ത് നിന്ന് പുറത്താക്കൂ..' ദീപക് ഷെട്ടി എന്ന വ്യക്തി ട്വിറ്ററിലൂടെ ട്രംപിനോട് അഭ്യര്‍ഥിക്കുന്നു. വിവരദോഷികള്‍ അമേരിക്കയില്‍ മാത്രമല്ല ഉള്ളതെന്നു വ്യക്തം.
അമേരിക്കന്‍ മലയാളികള്‍ പ്രതികരിച്ചില്ലെങ്കിലും കേരളത്തിലെ ഉശിരുള്ള ചെറുപ്പക്കാര്‍ അയാള്‍ക്ക് നല്ല മറുപടി കൊടുത്തു.
ന്യൂയോര്‍ക്കില്‍ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ വകുപ്പ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥയായ സിറ്റി സ്റ്റീഫനു അതേപ്പറ്റി അഭിപ്രായമൊന്നുമില്ല. അതിന്റെ പിന്നിലെ ഇന്ത്യന്‍രാഷ്ട്രീയ പദ്ധതികളൊന്നും അറിയില്ല എന്നര്‍ത്ഥം. ഓരോാരുത്തര്‍ക്കും ഓരോ അഭിപ്രായമെന്നു സിനി പ്രതികരിച്ചു.
സാമൂഹിക മാറ്റത്തിനുള്ള പ്രവര്‍ത്തക (ആക്ടിവിസ്റ്റ്) എന്ന നിലയിലുള്ള തന്റെ വിശ്വാസങ്ങളാണ് പ്രതിക്ഷേധത്തിലേക്ക് തന്നെ എത്തിച്ചതെന്നു സിനി പറഞ്ഞു. കറുത്ത നിറമുള്ള സ്ത്രീകള്‍ക്കും കുട്ടികള്‍ക്കും തുല്യ നീതി ലഭിക്കാനുള്ള പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങളില്‍ ഏഴു വര്‍ഷമായി സജീവമാണ്.
ന്യൂജേഴ്സിയിലെ സെറ്റണ്‍ ഹാള്‍ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയില് പഠിച്ചത് ഡോ. മാര്‍ട്ടിന്‍ ലൂഥര്‍ കിംഗ് ജൂണിയര്‍ സ്‌കോളര്‍ഷിപ്പ് നേടിയാണ്. സാമൂഹിക നീതിക്കുവേണ്ടി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കാനാഗ്രഹിക്കുന്ന കറുത്തവര്‍ക്ക് നല്‍കുന്ന ഫുള്‍ സ്‌കോളര്‍ഷിപ്പാണിത്.
രാജ്യത്തെ സാമൂഹിക പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങളുടെ ചരിത്രം അവിടെ നിന്നു പഠിച്ചു. ഈ രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ ചട്ടക്കൂട് മാറ്റിയ മാല്‍ക്കം എക്സ്, ഏഞ്ചല ഡേവിസ്, സെസാര്‍ ഷാവേസ് തുടങ്ങിയവരുടെ കൃതികള്‍ വായിച്ചു.
മിസ്സോറി യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയില് നിന്നാണു ജേര്‍ണലിസം മാസ്റ്റേഴ്സ്. ന്യൂയോര്‍ക്കിലെ റോക്ക്ലാന്‍ഡില്‍ താമസിക്കുന്ന തൊടുപുഴ സ്വദേശിസ്റ്റീഫന്‍ നിരപ്പത്ത്, ആനീസ് ദമ്പതികളുടെമൂത്ത പുത്രിയാണ് സിനി.
മൂന്നു വര്‍ഷമായി സിറ്റി എഡ്യൂക്കേഷന്‍ ഡിപ്പാര്‍ട്ട്മെന്റില്‍ 'എന്‍വൈസി ഗ്രേറ്റ്' പ്രോഗ്രാമില്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്നു. ഇമിഗ്രേഷന്‍ രേഖകളില്ലാത്ത കുട്ടികളെ സഹായിക്കുന്ന കമ്മിറ്റിയിലും പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്നു.
ഇ-മലയാളി: പ്രതിഷേധത്തിന്റെ മറവില്‍ വ്യാപകമായ അക്രമവും കൊള്ളയുമാണ് നടന്നത്. ആ സാഹചര്യ്ത്തില്‍ പ്രതിഷേധത്തെ എങ്ങനെ ന്യായീകരിക്കും?
സിനി: നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട മനുഷ്യജീവനെ മറന്ന് കൊള്ളയെ പറ്റി മാത്രം പറയുന്നവര്‍, അഥവാ അതില്‍ശ്രദ്ധ കേന്ദ്രീകരിക്കുന്നവര്‍, തെറ്റിദ്ധരിക്കപ്പെട്ടവരാണ്. പലരും വര്‍ഷങ്ങളായി സമാധാനപരമായി പ്രതിഷേധിക്കുന്നു. പക്ഷെ കറുത്തവരെ സംരക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ഒരു നടപടിയും എടുത്തില്ല. ഒരു മാറ്റവും വന്നില്ല.
പ്രതിഷേധക്കാരും കൊള്ളയടിക്കാരും രണ്ടു കൂട്ടരാണ്, ഒന്നല്ല. മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ കൊള്ളയുടെ ചിത്രങ്ങളും വീഡിയോകളും പങ്കുവെച്ച് സെന്‍സേഷന്‍ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നു. വാസ്തവത്തില്‍ ഇത് രണ്ടു ഗ്രൂപ്പാണ്. പ്രതിഷേധം ചിലര്‍ അവസരമാക്കി.
ആക്റ്റിവിസ്റ്റ് എന്ന നിലയിലുള്ള പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങളോട് വീട്ടുകാരുടെ നിലപാടെന്താണ്?
വീട്ടുകാര്‍ ഇതിനെ പിന്തുണയ്ക്കുന്നു. പഠനകാലം മുതല്‍ പ്രതിഷേധങ്ങളില്‍ പങ്കെടുക്കുകയും അവ സംഘടിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. എന്റെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റി മാതാപിതാക്കള്‍ക്ക് വ്യക്തമായ ധാരണയുണ്ട്. അവര്‍ എപ്പോഴും പിന്തുണ നല്‍കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ഇന്ത്യക്കാര്‍ വംശീയവാദികളാണോ? പൊതുവില്‍ നമുക്ക് കറുത്തവരെ ഇഷ്ടമല്ല എന്നതല്ലേ സത്യം.
പലപ്പോഴും ഇന്ത്യക്കാര്‍ വംശീയവാദികളും കറുത്തവര്‍ക്ക് എതിരുമാണ്. ഇത് വെള്ളക്കാരുടെ അധീശത്വത്തില്‍ നിന്നു നാം സ്വാംശീകരിച്ചതാണ്. പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് കോളനി വാഴ്ചക്കാലത്ത്. വംശീയതയും, നിറത്തെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കിയുള്ള വിവേചനവും (കളറിസം) രണ്ടു കാര്യങ്ങളാണ്. പക്ഷെ പലപ്പോഴും അതു ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് കിടക്കുന്നു.
വെള്ളക്കാരേക്കാള്‍ കറുത്തവര്‍ ഇന്ത്യക്കാരോട് വിവേചനപരമായോ വംശീയ വിദ്വേഷത്തോടെയോ പെരുമാറുന്നുവെന്നു പറയാറുണ്ട്. ഇതേപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള അഭിപ്രായമെന്താണ്?
ഈ പ്രസ്താവനയോട് പൂര്‍ണ്ണമായും എതിരഭിപ്രായം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. ചെറുപ്പത്തില്‍ എന്റെ സുഹൃത്തുക്കള്‍ പലരും കറുത്തവരും ലാറ്റിനോകളും ആയിരുന്നു. പഠിക്കുമ്പോഴും താമസിക്കുമ്പോഴും കറുത്തവരുടെ സമൂഹം ഒരു മടിയും കൂടാതെ എന്നെ സ്വീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. എന്നാല്‍ പല വെള്ളക്കാരും എന്നോട് അക്രമപരമായ പെരുമാറ്റം കാണിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ഹൈസ്‌കൂളില്‍ പഠിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ഞാനും ഏതാനും സുഹൃത്തുക്കളും റോക്ക്ലാന്‍ഡില്‍ ക്നാനായ കമ്യൂണിറ്റി സെന്ററിനു മുന്നില്‍ നില്‍ക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ഒരു പിക്കപ്പില്‍ വന്ന ഒരുകൂട്ടം വെള്ളക്കാരായ ചെറുപ്പക്കാര്‍ ഞങ്ങളെ ഭീകര പ്രവര്‍ത്തകര്‍ എന്നു വിളിച്ചതോര്‍ക്കുന്നു. ഇത് വംശീയതയാണ്.
വൈറ്റ് സൂപ്രമസി നിലനില്‍ക്കുന്നുവെന്നു നാം മനസിലാക്കണം. നാം വംശീയതയ്ക്കും വിവേചനത്തിനും ഇരയാകില്ല എന്നു കരുതുന്നത് അബദ്ധം മാത്രമായിരിക്കും.
തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ് രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തില്‍ ചേരാന്‍ പ്ലാനുണ്ടോ?
ഇലക്ഷനില്‍ നില്‍ക്കുന്നതിനോ, രാഷ്ട്രീയ സ്ഥാനത്തിലോ താത്പര്യമില്ല. കലാരംഗമാണ് താന്‍ ലക്ഷ്യമിടുന്നത്. അഭിനയം, പാട്ട് എന്നിവ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്നു. അതുപോലെ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ രംഗത്തെ ജോലിയും.
മാസ്റ്റേഴ്സ് ബിരുദം ജേര്‍ണലിസത്തിലായിട്ടും മാധ്യമരംഗത്തേക്ക് പോകാതിരുന്നതെന്താണ്?
വാര്‍ത്താലോകവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെടാന്‍ ഒരിക്കലും ആഗ്രഹിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. കാര്യങ്ങളുടെ സത്യാവസ്ഥ കണ്ടെത്താന്‍ പറ്റുന്ന കഴിവുകള്‍ നല്‍കുന്നു എന്നതുകൊണ്ടാണ് ജേര്‍ണലിസം പഠിച്ചത്. വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ രംഗത്ത് പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ജേര്‍ണലിസം പഠിച്ചത് ഏറെ ഉപകാരപ്പെട്ടു. എന്റെ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികളുമൊത്ത് പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്നതില്‍ ഞാന്‍ സന്തോഷം കാണുന്നു.

തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ് രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തില്‍ ചേരാന്‍ പ്ലാനുണ്ടോ?

Hats off to 'How others see Trumpers'. Nothing else to add to it. What kind of people would follow Trump? Except some nut Christians and psychopaths like john, james, jacob and bobby. I am pretty sure, they don't want to read what 'How others see Trumper' wrote. Probably they will change their mind. Most of the Trump supporters are afraid of change. They don't want to take any risk because they are afraid of their own shadow. So they walk always with the shadow. Their tactic is to make friendship with the shadow otherwise the boss, Trump is going to get them. Trump supporters are like drug dealers; once they stop selling it, their Master will eliminate them. As protests against police brutality and racial profiling continue to dominate the news cycle, a rediscovered video of a white police officer pulling over a black for driving 65mph on a 70mph zone is taking over social media.
The video, posted on Feb 18, 2020, depicts a black motorist, Ace Perry, being pulled over by a Sampson County, NC, police officer who identifies himself as deputy Snow.
The most disturbing part of the video is when the officer says he was suspicious because Perry was traveling 65 mph in a 70 mph zone. He then issues Perry with a warning but refuses to tell him what the warning is for.
When Perry confronted him after he received a “written warning” for driving under the speed limit, the cop claimed obeying all the traffic laws and not speeding was “suspicious.” He couldn’t even look at Perry in the eye, likely knowing that his job consists of harassing innocent people for no reason.
“Wouldn’t you say it is kind of suspicious to travel under the speed limit and when the speed limit is 70?” the deputy asked before he dismissed Perry, telling him, “I’ve got stuff to do.”
Perry answered back, telling the cop that he has stuff to do too and would have appreciated not being pulled over and harassed by a racial profiling cop.

My appreciation for Sini. This is something I really wanted to do. Protesting against a cruel act does not mean you hate or love a party or person. The protocol for judgment and punishment should be uniform for all. No one is saying that all the African Americans are good people and all the white people are bad. Malayalees should not take too much credit for standing on feet in 20 or 30 years. Most of us were raised in a good way with good education also. We came from a society that kept a high moral standard. For most of us, someone came here earlier and set the soil for our growth. We never went through slavery. Even though emancipation was proclaimed 150 years ago, until 50 years ago they could not sit in a bus or bench with the whites or go to the same school. They were prohibited from going to a good school. There was no one to boost their morale. They were denied self esteem. If they made some growth in some places, it was purposely destroyed. Now the African Americans have started excelling in different areas as teachers, principals, movie stars, news reporters, nurses, sports stars et. It should be the moral responsibility of the white leaders to encourage them in every growth. I have several African American friends who worked with me. They are very loving, kind and God-fearing people with good values. I see good hearts in all of them which I don't see in some of my white friends. It will take another generation for the racism to smooth out. This is a transition time as the multicultural American society is not seeing racism in the same way as the white Americans do. We need to wait patiently and raise our voices wherever we need to instead of sitting in our comfort zones.
